The Healthy Eating Pyramid is Nutrition Australia’s flagship nutrition education model. It’s existed for more than 30 years, and is used in posters, magnets, games, books and online as a tool to educate the children and adults about the types and amounts proportions of foods that we should aim to eat every day for good health.
The new pyramid has been designed as a visual tool to reflect the latest Australian dietary guidelines, which were released in 2013. These guidelines are based on a painstaking review of a massive body of research papers (55,000 or so) to give us the most evidence-based advice. The new pyramid provides clearer advice on the five core food groups we should aim to eat every day for a healthy balanced diet.
The new pyramid is essentially a new twist on a consistent theme:
- Enjoy a variety of foods from the five food groups
- Choose mostly plant-based foods
- Limit added saturated fats, sugar and salt
- Choose water as your main drink
